Thoughts of the week - Sarah

Here are our thoughts on how COVID-19 has impacted eCommerce & strategies we are putting in place to help small businesses

Our CEO's thoughts:
Here’s what you can expect from Screen Pages:

• We have created a package for small business owners, affected by these shutdowns, to get an eCommerce store up and running swiftly and continue to serve their customers. This includes:

1. In-depth consultation

  1. Magento Opensource website
  2. Secure hosting with SSL
  3. Import of product/services data
  4. Support after going live

Don't hesitate to contact us today if we can help you.

• We will be launching "Useful strategies to combat disruptions", a series of weekly videos with strategies and ideas on how to overcome the disruption your eCommerce store might be experiencing during this period.

Our Project Manager's thoughts:

"What I have seen so far amongst out own customer base and other trends in the eCommerce ecosystem for merchants:

In a massive over simplification, there are almost 2 distinct scenarios for those affected.

  1. A Positive scenario

The positive scenario is some merchants are taking so many orders they are struggling to fulfil them - some merchants are even taking their site offline to try and catch up with the demand. Ultimately, this will likely hurt their reputation as customers look to them to supply them with valued items.

These merchants are, as expected, in the food and drink sectors but also services in the DIY sectors.

  1. A Negative scenario

The negative scenario is that for the "nice-to-have" sectors, sales have plummeted and merchants are having issues paying for their staff.

A position that no one wants to be in.

However, in just a short amount of time, these numbers are already taking a turn and both lines are starting to head back to a normal position. It is too soon to give any real trend analysis but this should at least give us some hope that it is not all doom and gloom. The merchants that are struggling to fulfil orders are heading towards a sustainable level and the merchants with no orders are starting to receive orders trickle back in. This could be because, as panic and anxiety start to subside, people are starting to think about the future again and buying goods they want rather than only stockpiling the goods they see as necessities.

Based on what I have seen and discussed with various merchants, we are in a "knuckle down to get through these hard and very unusual times". This is not going to be quick and it is not going to be easy but we need to take it one order at a time."
